I have had: Ska Modus Hoperandi, Oskar Blues Gubna, Southern Star Pine Belt Pale, & Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout. Enjoyed each and every one. I haven’t really noticed any sort of “metallic” taste either. Gubna is probably tops of those four, with Buried Hatchet a close second.

One note on the Pine Belt Pale… I first had it a little more than a year ago, and when looking it up online, I noted one of the hops in the recipe was the Japanese hop Sorachi Ace. If you look now, it no longer gets a mention. Seems to be a recipe change. It had a sort of pineapple note to it, but now it no longer does IMHO.

  2. Love it! You guys have a great group of cans their for your tasting! If you pour them into glasses you won’t even think about that “metallic” flavor. I’ve had most of what you’ve got lined up and I’d say my top three would be in no particular order:
    Surly’s Abrasive Ale
    Southern Star Buried Hatchet
Moose Drool Brown/Ska Modus Hoperandi – TIE

    Enjoy! Viva la can!

@Russ & @Big Tex, I’m pretty stoked to drink all these beers I’ve never had, heard lots of good things about many. But, I’m plagued with this metallic taste I get which in theory isn’t possible, so I’m trying to get around this to prove my insanity with a couple other people what will be tasting the same brews. So, what better way then complete immersion!

Hope you’ll listen to the podcasts when they are released over the next couple of weeks.

Peter, if you can squeeze in one more, we’d have an even 24 cans! That’s enough to have 3 full length 8 beer podcasts! Wow, my poor liver!

  4. Eric L says:

Pine Belt Pale was originally brewed with Sorachi Ace hops because of the hop shortage, Brian says it was about all they could get at the time! It is now brewed with Palisade hops. A few of us are trying to talk them into releasing the Sorachi Ace version again as a special release. 🙂

    • Simply Beer says:

@Eric, that is a great piece of history of the beer. Thanks! I’m a huge fan of sorachi hops (have about 4 oz of whole hops in my fridge now) If they ever make that special release, I hope you think of me, would love to trade some local beers!

@kevin – I added Brew Free or Die! Could leave out 21A!

  5. Scott says:

Peter – What a blast. Sending 2 more cans to add to the party –
Can’t wait to hear which one(s) top the list… Happy 4th!
