Mahr’s Brau Saphir Weiss
This beer was given to me by Amanti Vino to review and to be quite frank, it probably isn’t a beer I would have picked up to begin with. But, with that said I go in with an open mind hoping for the best. It is actually a pretty stupid reason why I wouldn’t have purchased this beer, the label is a bit cheesy.
I couldn’t find anything on Mahr’s website about this and RateBeer only had 7 ratings for it… So on with my two cents!
ABV: 5.6%
Bottle: 500ml
Style: Hefeweizen
Appearance:
I know weiss beers are supposed to be carbonated, but holy cow! I poured this one very slowly and it still exploded with a good 4 inches of head. Although it does look very nice, billowy, and long lasting; leaving some great lacing behind. As you might expect from the head, there is a massive torrent of bubbles racing through this nice hazy auburn colored beer.
Aroma:
Keep in mind this is a Weiss beer, they tend not to bash you over the head with their aromas. This beer has a nice strong yeasty, fresh baked bread, banana, and a subtle earth hop quality. It was actually more of intense aroma then I had expected.
Taste:
Tons of carbonation created a very effervescent mouth-feel, that feels like it is scrubbing your mouth clean. That was a bit much for me, but the flavor of this beer was incredible. It was such an easy drinking flavorful brew. Very strong yeasty banana and lemon characters right up front which pretty much persist throughout the beer and it finished with a nice earthy hop finish. The Saphire hops really shine through nicely in the finish of this beer.
Glassware:Weizen
Calories: at 5.6% the Calorie Chart estimates about 175-190 cal per 12oz
Overall Impression:
I think I found a new summer weisse beer. Great flavor, that drinks easy and it is especially nice for the warm spring days moving into summer. …You see you can’t always judge a book by its cover. If you haven’t tried this ugly labeled bottle of beer, you should; the contents are way superior!
I’m guilty of that too – some labels just speak to me and others seem to say ‘pass’ as I go through the decision-making process. Seems its still true that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover! Where is this beer from?
I’ve seen it at most local nj beer stores. Should be available
Wow, never would have guessed, and I too would have passed it up over and over again based on nothing more than the label. WE are all fallible creatures…
LOL! that we are Don, now go out and try it and let me know what you think. Maybe another reason why there were only 7 reviews on RateBeer????
I love getting to try and rate a beer that not many other people have had the opportunity to do so. This is a good looking weiss. Where is it brewed?
@James, It was brewed in Bamberg Germany. Needs a better label to be a bit more marketable, at least to knuckleheads like me.
